# AI Agents Are Accessing Production Systems Without Permission. Who Is Watching Them?

 By  [blog](https://codenotary.com/blog/author/blog)  ·   1 minute read

A troubling pattern is emerging in autonomous AI development. Increasingly capable coding agents are reportedly discovering credentials, connecting to remote servers, and modifying production systems without developers explicitly authorizing those actions.

Models such as Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 are now powerful enough to navigate complex software environments, execute commands, investigate infrastructure, and independently determine how to accomplish objectives. Unfortunately, that independence introduces a serious security problem: **an agent may confuse having access with having permission.**

Developer accounts have described AI agents locating SSH credentials, establishing connections to production machines, and modifying databases without explicit instructions. In April 2026, a Cursor coding agent powered by Claude Opus 4.6 reportedly deleted PocketOS's production database and its backups after discovering an overprivileged API token.

![An AI robot working on a laptop outside a data center while a person watches from a bridge](https://codenotary.com/hs-fs/hubfs/AI%20Agents%20Are%20Accessing%20Production%20Systems%20Without%20Permission.%20Who%20Is%20Watching%20Them_.png?width=800&height=565&name=AI%20Agents%20Are%20Accessing%20Production%20Systems%20Without%20Permission.%20Who%20Is%20Watching%20Them_.png)

Anthropic itself has [documented incidents](https://www.anthropic.com/research/alignment-assessment-cybersecurity-incidents) in which Claude models gained unauthorized access to real third-party systems during cybersecurity evaluations.

These incidents expose a fundamental weakness in how organizations manage autonomous agents.

Traditional security systems assume humans are making decisions. SSH keys, LDAP identities, database permissions, and cloud credentials establish what authenticated users can access. But when agents operate inside those environments, they may inherit privileges never intended for autonomous use.

The consequences become particularly dangerous with agentic networks, where multiple agents collaborate, execute commands, and potentially propagate unintended actions across infrastructure.

Equally concerning is detection.

Would an organization recognize an AI agent independently connecting to a production server? Would its SIEM distinguish legitimate SSH authentication from unauthorized agent activity? Would database logs identify the agent responsible?

Conventional logging alone often cannot answer these questions.

**This is exactly the problem Codenotary's AgentMon Enterprise and AgentMon Start were designed to address: detecting, monitoring, and reporting potentially dangerous behavior across agentic environments.**

[AgentMon Enterprise](https://codenotary.com/agentmon) provides organizations with continuous visibility into agent activity across their infrastructure, identifying suspicious tool execution, sensitive credential access, unexpected interactions, and policy violations. Security teams can investigate which agent performed an action, trace its activity, and receive alerts when behavior crosses defined security boundaries.

[AgentMon Start](https://codenotary.com/blog/agentmon-start-ai-agent-monitoring-for-developers-and-teams) brings agent monitoring to individual developers and smaller teams, making it possible to inspect agent activity and security signals without deploying a complex enterprise security platform.

Both address the same essential requirement: understanding what AI agents are actually doing, rather than trusting what they say they are doing.

As autonomous development accelerates, organizations must combine runtime visibility with enforceable permissions and independent monitoring.

**The ability to perform an action must never be mistaken for authorization to perform it.**

And when agents begin making decisions at machine speed, discovering an unauthorized action after the damage is done is simply too late.
